Tree service in Longview, Washington
Longview’s code has no permit chapter for private trees, so a yard tree can come down without city sign-off. A tree in the planting strip is another matter: cutting, pruning or removing one without the Parks Director’s written permit carries a $200 civil penalty plus restitution under LMC 12.02.

Tree removal permits in Longview
For a tree in your back or side yard, Longview sets no diameter threshold and no fee, because the municipal code has no private-tree permit chapter at all. Two rules still reach private land. The critical areas chapter, LMC 17.10, applies to trees on steep slopes, wetlands or stream buffers, and the property maintenance chapter, LMC 16.30, is the tool the city uses for a neglected hazard.
The planting strip between sidewalk and curb is regulated. LMC 12.02.030 requires a written permit from the Parks Director to cut, prune or remove a strip tree, and 12.02.020 requires one to plant there; skipping it means a $200 civil penalty plus restitution. The city removes qualifying street trees at no cost to the owner, and applications to remove trees on its prohibited list are taken quarterly, with priority to trees damaging hardscape and removal within a year. Call the Urban Forestry Division in Parks and Recreation at 360-442-5421 before touching a strip tree, and see the Washington permit guide for how other cities compare.

Storm records for Cowlitz County (covers Longview)
Longview’s tree season is winter. NOAA’s storm record holds 154 reports for Cowlitz County, and 75 percent of them fall between November and February, peaking in February, January and December. Heavy snow leads with 67 reports, high wind follows with 39 and winter storms add 26, while ice storms and wildfire log 7 each.
That volume puts the county 12th of Washington’s 39, and the most recent three years ran a little busier than the three before, 53 reports against 43. FEMA’s National Risk Index (December 2025) is milder than the count suggests, rating wind and ice Relatively Low and the county’s overall risk Relatively Moderate, so read the record as steady winter loading rather than rare catastrophe.

The county’s largest recent episode began on January 16, 2024, when the arctic air that had settled over the region refused to leave. Temperatures stayed below freezing while fresh rounds of precipitation fell as freezing rain and snow across the Lower Columbia zone and the South Washington Cascades and foothills. NOAA logged 6 reports from it, 5 of them ice storms. Ice is the load that splits multi-stem maples and snaps conifer tops, so a tree that came through that week with a hanging limb or cracked union deserves a look before next winter.

Power lines and utilities in Longview
Cowlitz PUD serves Longview, and its outage line is 844-965-1319. The PUD trims or removes trees growing into its high-voltage primary distribution lines, but the service wire from the transformer to your house is yours to keep clear. Its guidance is a 10-foot minimum from overhead lines, with planting zones for trees under 25 feet, 25 to 45 feet and over 45 feet at maturity.
The PUD prunes on a three-year cycle, offers a courtesy disconnect of the service wire through its Engineering Department at 360-501-9546, and does a free “make ready” if you want a tree near its lines removed or pruned. The contacts and the rest of its program are on our Cowlitz PUD tree trimming page.
Never let a crew or a ladder near a line the PUD owns; read tree removal near power lines first, and check the utility directory if your bill names another provider.

Growing conditions in Longview
Longview sits in USDA hardiness zone 8b. When you replant after a removal, use the PUD’s mature-height zones to place the new tree: short species near the service wire, tall ones well away from it. Given 67 heavy-snow and 7 ice-storm reports in the county record, favor trees with strong single leaders and flexible branching over brittle, wide-crowned ones.

Tree services in Longview
The service pages below apply Longview’s rules job by job. Tree removal covers the planting-strip permit and how large conifers come down; tree trimming covers the service wire you maintain yourself; stump grinding starts with an 811 locate; and emergency tree service is for the ice and snow nights the county record keeps logging.
What to do next
Start by locating the tree: yard, planting strip or critical area. A yard tree needs no city permit, a strip tree needs the Parks Director’s written permit, and a slope or stream buffer brings LMC 17.10 into play. If the tree has ice or snow damage, get a risk assessment before deciding. Outdoor burning of the debris falls under the Southwest Clean Air Agency. Check any company in the Washington license lookup before paying a deposit.
