Storm records for Yamhill County

January and February each logged 20 reports and December 16, so nearly three quarters of the county’s record falls in the November-to-February window. High wind leads the 79 reports from 2016 through 2026 with 29, then heavy snow at 24, strong wind and winter storms at 9 each, and ice storms at 4. June and July logged none.

That total ranks Yamhill 29th of Oregon’s 36 counties, so the storm load is modest. The weight comes from the few big ice events: the costliest, on February 11, 2021, brought heavy snow and then ice across the northern Willamette Valley, cut power to more than 400,000 people regionally, and NOAA attached $10.1 million in damage to the county’s zones.

Recent years track the prior ones closely, 21 reports in 2023 through 2025 against 23 before, so expect at least one wind or ice event most winters.

The largest recent cluster came on February 13, 2025. Unusually cold air sat over western Oregon that morning when a warm front pushed precipitation north, and the warm air overrunning the cold produced snow, sleet and freezing rain through February 14. NOAA logged two heavy-snow reports, one winter storm and one ice storm across the West Central Willamette Valley, the West Hills and Chehalem Mountains, and the north Coast Range zones.

Hazard ratings

Strong wind: Relatively LowIce storm: Relatively ModerateWinter weather: Relatively LowWildfire: Very Low

FEMA’s National Risk Index (December 2025) rates Yamhill County Relatively Moderate overall and for ice storms (score 68.7), Relatively Low for strong wind and winter weather, and Very Low for wildfire. Wildfire risk to homes is higher than in only 11% of Oregon counties.

Ice is the hazard to prepare for. Oaks and bigleaf maples with long horizontal limbs over a roof or driveway are the usual candidates for a reduction cut in fall; a risk assessment sorts out which ones need it.

Wildfire risk to homes: higher than 11% of Oregon counties (USDA Forest Service, Wildfire Risk to Communities).

Burning the debris

Oregon DEQ sets burning rules under OAR 340-264, and Yamhill County is one of five counties with its own section in OAR 340-264-0110, alongside Benton, Linn, Marion and Polk. Power lines and utilities

McMinnville Water & Light trims trees near its lines through a contractor on a three-year cycle; its policy does not say who handles the service drop to the house, so ask before you hire a crew for that span. Report outages to MW&L at (503) 472-6158, which is answered around the clock. Other utilities in the county are not mapped yet; see the utilities page.

Climate and growing conditions

The whole county is USDA hardiness zone 8b, where winter cold rarely limits replanting. Dry summers and ice load do. Oregon white oak and Douglas fir are natural fits for the valley; given the oak borer, buy nursery stock rather than transplanting from infested sites, and plant in fall so roots establish over the rainy season.

What to do next

Before an ice season, have large limbs over the house assessed. For a removal, plan how ash or oak wood will be handled under the pest rules, confirm the county burn rule, then call. After a storm, use the fallen tree guide and the Oregon storm damage and insurance guide. Check any company in the Oregon tree service license lookup first.
