Storm records for Tillamook County

No other hazard comes close. High wind makes up 109 of Tillamook County’s 152 NOAA storm reports since 2016, more than 70% of the record, with heavy snow a distant second at 23 and winter storms at 7. Three tornado reports and three thunderstorm-wind entries show the coast can produce short, violent gusts too.

The season is long and starts early. January leads with 33 reports, November and December have 27 each, February 26 and October 15. From May through August the record is empty. The four months from November through February hold 74% of reports, so fall pruning is the window that matters.

The county ranks 12th of 36, and the record lists four deaths and one injury. The costliest episode, a December 26, 2022 windstorm, carries $3 million in damage. Recent years are calmer: 37 reports in 2023 through 2025 against 48 in 2020 through 2022, about 23% fewer.

On January 8, 2024, a strong cold front swept across the region and pulled in much colder air. Deep onshore flow behind it brought heavy snow and strong winds to the mountains and snow down to the lowlands. NOAA logged five reports for the Coast Range of northwest Oregon and the Northern Oregon Coast zones: two for heavy snow, two for high wind and one for winter weather.

Hazard ratings

Strong wind: Relatively LowIce storm: Relatively LowWinter weather: Very LowWildfire: Very Low

FEMA’s National Risk Index (December 2025) rates Tillamook County Relatively Moderate overall, Relatively Low for strong wind and ice storms, and Very Low for winter weather and wildfire. The wind rating looks mild next to the NOAA count; the index weighs expected losses across the county, and much of the county is forest, not houses.

USDA’s Forest Service puts the wildfire risk to homes higher than 17% of Oregon counties. For a coastal homeowner, the job is wind-firmness: watch for root rot, lean and exposed edges after neighboring trees come out.

Wildfire risk to homes: higher than 17% of Oregon counties (USDA Forest Service, Wildfire Risk to Communities).

Power lines and utilities

Tillamook PUD is the mapped utility. Report outages at (503) 842-2535 or (800) 422-2535; after hours, call (503) 842-2122. The PUD publishes planting guidance but no stated tree-trimming policy, so ask before assuming it will clear a limb over your service drop. With 109 high-wind reports in the record, that call is worth making in fall rather than after the first storm.

Labor index

No metro wage series covers Tillamook County, so this page uses BLS’s Oregon statewide mean for tree trimmers and pruners: $35.40 an hour. Climate and growing conditions

Tillamook County is mostly USDA hardiness zone 9a, ranging from 8b inland to 9b on the mildest coast. Cold rarely limits what grows here; salt wind and saturated soil do. Replant with wind-firm species, give big conifers room, and avoid planting where a falling tree would reach the house.
