Stump grinding in Salem, Oregon

In Salem, what happens to the grindings matters as much as the grinding: the city is inside Oregon’s emerald ash borer quarantine, and Mediterranean oak borer is confirmed here too.

Before the grinder arrives in Salem

Request an 811 locate before the grinder arrives, with the lead time in the card above. The cutter head goes below grade where buried gas, water, power and communication lines run, and a stump over a marked line is ground shallow or left in place.

Salem’s tree permit under SRC Chapter 808 covers significant trees, riparian trees and required landscaping, and the 2023 city reading of “removal” includes cutting 30 percent or more of the roots. If the tree came down under a permit, grind within its terms. A stump between the street and sidewalk is on city-owned ground and needs the separate street tree permit application before you touch it.

What stump grinding costs in Salem

The modeled range below starts with stump diameter, measured across the root flare, plus a trip minimum for small jobs. A big fir or oak flares well beyond its trunk, and that wood is what gets ground.

Depth adds passes: levelling for lawn is quicker than grinding deep to replant. Disposal matters here too, because ash and infested oak have to be handled under pest rules rather than hauled anywhere. BLS puts Salem’s mean wage for tree trimmers and pruners at $34.49 an hour, the wage behind the model rather than a price (method).

Grindings, wood and quarantines

Grinding is the cleanest way to deal with an ash stump in Salem. Raw ash wood has to stay inside the EAB quarantine and can leave only as chips one inch or smaller or as kiln-dried, debarked lumber, with loads covered from April 1 to September 30. Grindings from an ash stump meet the chip rule if they are fine enough; ask the operator. See EAB in Oregon.

For an oak killed by Mediterranean oak borer, the guidance is to cut, then burn or chip the infested wood to one inch on site, stump included, and keep firewood within 10 miles. Any burning falls under Oregon DEQ rules; check Oregon yard debris burning rules first.

Quarantine: Emerald ash borer (EAB) rules restrict moving wood, chips and stumps out of Marion County.

Replanting the spot

Grind in the dry months. The Salem McNary station averages 0.25 inches of rain in July and 0.39 in August, against 6.97 in December, and a heavy grinder on soaked clay leaves ruts. Note that the EAB covered-load window runs April 1 to September 30, so plan to haul ash chips under a tarp.

For replanting, Salem is USDA zone 8b. Clear the fresh chips, which pull nitrogen as they break down, fill with topsoil, and plant in fall to use the wet season. Skip ash as the replacement while the borer is here.

What to do next

Call 811, measure the stump across the flare, and tell the operator the species before the job is priced, since ash and oak change the disposal plan. If the stump is between the street and sidewalk, the street tree permit comes first.

Check the operator with the Oregon tree service license lookup. For a tree still standing, see Salem tree removal or the Salem hub.
