Modeled cost basis$225/crew-hour

Emergency work is priced by crew-hour; ask for the call-out minimum.

First hour: who to call

The first hour has a fixed order. Get everyone away from the tree and well back from any downed wire, then report the line to PGE at 503-464-7777 or 800-544-1795, or, in Salem Electric’s West Salem, downtown and North Salem territory, to the number on your bill. Do not cut or move anything touching a line; PGE handles its transmission and distribution lines, and trims the service wire to a house only when branches are straining or rubbing it.

Next, limit the damage: shut off gas if you smell it, tarp open roof sections, and move cars from under hung limbs. Then call a tree crew. A city-owned tree between the street and sidewalk should be reported to the city rather than cut by a private crew.

A storm-damaged tree still standing may be a significant tree, 30 inches DBH or larger or an Oregon white oak of 20 inches or more. Call Development Services at 503-584-4646 before the follow-up removal.

Anyone hurt, or a line down? Call 911 first, then the utility. Do not approach a tree on a wire.

Largest recent episode: 2020-09-07: 7 reports (Wildfire 7).

Marion County’s largest recorded episode was fire, not snow. Starting September 7, 2020, a strong cold front from the east drove fierce downslope winds off the Cascades and Coast Range into the next day. With very low humidity and dry fuels, existing fires grew explosively, and NOAA logged seven wildfire reports across the North Oregon Cascades and foothills.

Insurance and documentation

Document everything before the crew cuts. Photograph the whole scene, every point where the tree touches the house, fence or car, and the root plate or broken stem. Save receipts for tarps, emergency cutting and any lodging.

Policies usually separate a tree that hit a covered structure from one that only landed in the yard, and an insurer may question a tree that was visibly dead beforehand. The Oregon storm damage and tree insurance guide covers the claim, and fallen tree removal covers the cleanup. If the downed tree is an ash, the wood stays inside the EAB quarantine.

DFR: if a tree falls on your house the policy may cover the damage; file with your own insurer even if the tree is rooted in a neighbor's yard; debris removal from home/outbuildings is generally paid when a fallen tree causes damage; a tree that falls without damaging the residence is typically not covered for removal. No dollar sublimit stated. Source

What emergency work costs

Expect emergency work to run above the modeled range for planned jobs in the table below. The tree is often resting on a structure under tension, crews work in bad weather and after hours, and a tree across a roof may need a crane to lift sections off without more damage.

BLS puts Salem’s mean wage for tree trimmers and pruners at $34.49 an hour, with roughly 100 workers in the local field (method). A workforce that small gets booked out quickly after a snowstorm, which is when the price climbs.

Tree heightCrew-hoursOregon modeled range
Under 25 ft2–4$450–$900
25 to 50 ft4–8$900–$1,800
50 to 80 ft8–16$1,800–$3,600
Over 80 ft14–30$3,150–$6,750

Modeled estimate, not quotes (method): crew-hours × $225 per crew-hour; ×1.25 within 10 ft of a structure, ×1.3 with no truck access; a crane day adds $1,500–$3,500; stump grinding is separate.

What to do next

Save your utility’s outage number (PGE’s is 503-464-7777) and the Development Services number, 503-584-4646, now. After a storm, check that any crew offering work is on the Oregon tree service license lookup before you sign.

When the emergency is over, a tree risk assessment on the remaining trees helps avoid the next call. The Salem hub has the rest of the city data.
