Tree removal permits in Corvallis

Corvallis does not set a trunk-size threshold for private trees. What the Land Development Code regulates is category: trees designated significant vegetation under LDC 4.12, trees in historic areas, and trees planted or preserved to meet landscaping requirements on a development site under LDC 4.2 all fall under review before removal, and there is no general permit for everything else on an ordinary lot. The chapter text could not be read for this page, so the exact review path and any fee are unconfirmed.

Because the answer depends on how your lot and tree are classified, ask Development Services at 541-766-6929 whether your parcel carries significant-vegetation, historic or landscaping conditions before you book a crew. Street trees are a separate system: pruning or removing a tree in the right-of-way needs an Urban Forestry permit from Parks and Recreation, removal is approved only when the tree is unsound, diseased, threatening infrastructure or blocking approved development, and the work must be done by an insured firm. The Oregon permit guide shows how other cities handle the same questions.

Storm records for Benton County (covers Corvallis)

Benton County is near the bottom of Oregon’s storm table. NOAA logged 70 reports for the county since 2016, which ranks it 32nd of the state’s 36 counties, and FEMA’s National Risk Index (December 2025) rates strong wind Very Low at 13.5 and both ice storm and winter weather Relatively Low. Storms are rarer here than in most Oregon counties, so most Corvallis removals are planned jobs, decided by the tree’s condition and the owner’s calendar rather than by a storm.

When something does arrive it is usually wind: high wind accounts for 33 of the 70 reports and strong wind for 7 more, with heavy snow at 13 and ice storms at 8. January, February and December are the peak months, and 69 percent of reports fall between November and February. The recent count has edged up, 22 reports in the last three years against 17 in the three before, but the totals stay small.

Largest recent episode: 2025-02-13: 3 reports (Ice Storm 2, Winter Storm 1).

The county’s largest recent episode was an ice event. On February 13, 2025, unusually cold air sat over the valley as a warm front pushed precipitation northward over it, and the overrunning produced snow, sleet and freezing rain across western Oregon into February 14; NOAA logged 2 ice-storm and 1 winter-storm report for the Benton County lowlands and Coast Range zones. Ice is the rarer load here, 8 reports to wind’s 33, but a glaze breaks limbs that wind never would, so a tree with long horizontal branches over the house or the drive is the one to have reduced before the next cold snap.

Power lines and utilities in Corvallis

Pacific Power (PacifiCorp) is the utility for Corvallis. Pacific Power prunes near its distribution lines at no cost and keeps its transmission rights-of-way clear. It also offers a free temporary disconnect of the service line so you or a licensed crew can work near the wire between the pole and your house. Its planting guide keeps trees that mature under 20 ft at least 20 ft from a pole, 20 to 40 ft trees at least 40 ft away, and taller trees at least 60 ft away, and it clears poles 8 ft high within a 10-ft radius. Report outages at 1-877-508-5088 or by texting OUT to 722797.

If your bill names a different utility, use the contact on the bill and look it up in the utility directory. A tree in contact with any line is the utility’s call first, then the crew’s; see tree removal near power lines.

Rain, snow and the growing season in Corvallis

The Corvallis State University station records 43.0 inches of precipitation a year, with December the wettest month at 7.7 inches and July the driest at 0.3, and only 2.9 inches of snow in an average year. That pattern sets the work calendar: July and August are the months when the ground is firm enough for trucks and cranes without rutting a lawn, and December through February are when saturated soil lets a shallow-rooted tree lean. USDA hardiness zone 8b covers the city, so Douglas fir, bigleaf maple and the oaks native to the valley all replant well, and a tree put in during October or November gets the full wet season to root.

The wage is what a climber earns, not what a job costs, and the modeled ranges on the service pages are built from crew-hours that add the truck, chipper, insurance and disposal to it.

Albany is the nearest city at 10 miles, then Lebanon at 18, Dallas at 24, Salem at 27, Keizer at 32 and Eugene at 36, each of which sets its own permit rule, so a tree near a city line gets that city’s rule, not Corvallis’s. Tree services in Corvallis

The pages below carry Corvallis’s category-based rule and the Oregon modeled ranges for each job. Removal is where significant-vegetation and historic-area review come in, and where the street-tree permit and the insured-firm requirement apply; trimming in the right-of-way needs the same Urban Forestry permit; stump grinding needs the 811 locate; and the emergency page sets the order of calls after an ice night.

What to do next

Find out how your lot is classified before you measure anything: a call to Development Services at 541-766-6929 settles whether the tree is reviewed, and a street tree goes to Urban Forestry. For a tree that is leaning or losing limbs, a risk assessment is the document that supports an unsound-tree removal in the right-of-way. Confirm the company’s standing in the Oregon license lookup before paying a deposit.
