Pruning rules and permits in Tacoma

On private property, routine pruning needs no city permit, though a lot in or near a wetland, stream or slope falls under the critical areas code (TMC 13.11) and is worth a call to Planning & Development Services before heavy cutting. The city’s urban forestry program is set out in TMC 9.20.

A tree in the right-of-way is the city’s concern. Planting, pruning or removing one requires an RTRE permit, and both planting and pruning permits are free. Removal is also free unless the tree is classed as a conflict tree, which carries a Canopy Loss Fee of $130 per caliper inch less credits.

That makes over-pruning a street tree into a stub an expensive mistake if the city later treats it as a removal. Keep cuts to standard pruning, and if a branch crosses the boundary, read Washington neighbor tree law.

Power lines and utilities in Tacoma

Tacoma Power serves the city. It says its crews keep clearance on all the transmission and distribution circuits it operates on a 4-year cycle; it does not publish a clearance distance or say whether it handles the service drop to your house, so call the number on your bill before work near the drop. Its outage line is 253-502-8602.

Do not prune within reach of a line yourself; ask Tacoma Power first and see trees near power lines.

What trimming costs in Tacoma

The modeled range below follows crew-hours, and pruning hours climb with height and with how many cuts must be rigged rather than dropped. Tall Douglas fir and western redcedar, common in Tacoma yards, usually mean a climber and the upper rows of the table.

BLS puts the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue mean wage for tree trimmers and pruners at $33.85 an hour across 310 jobs, an index of labor cost rather than a quote. Work near energized lines needs line-clearance qualified crews, which narrows the pool and can push a bid up (method).

When to trim in Tacoma

Summer is the dry window: the Tacoma station averages 0.55 inches of rain in July and 0.83 in August, against 6.5 in November. Pruning in mid to late summer lets crews work on firm ground and thins crowns before the February, January and December storm peak. Spongy moth has been confirmed locally, so inspect cut wood before moving it.

Tacoma sits in USDA hardiness zone 8b, which allows a wide choice of replacement trees; for street trees the city’s RTRE permit covers planting too. See the tree guides and western redcedar dieback before choosing a cedar.

What to do next

Know whether the branch is near a primary line or a service drop, and call Tacoma Power before anyone climbs. Pull a free RTRE permit for any street-tree pruning. For a tree with defects, a tree risk assessment tells you whether pruning will do.

Two quotes for the same tree can differ by thousands. The gap is usually in what's included, not the cutting.
