Tree trimming in Bellevue, Washington
Bellevue’s tree permit is a removal permit, triggered at 6 in DBH, so the permit box below is about taking a tree out, not shaping it. What reaches a trimming job is the city’s rule that paid tree work be done by a registered or licensed provider, the right-of-way code for street trees, and the utility’s clearance standards for anything near a line.
3–8 crew-hours; not a quote.

Pruning rules and permits in Bellevue
Bellevue’s permit rule is written for removal: a significant tree is 6 in DBH at 4 ft, a landmark tree 24 in, and the Tree Removal Only permit under BCC 23.76.035 covers taking them out. Pruning is a different question, and the city rule that reaches it directly is the provider rule: Bellevue requires a registered or licensed provider for paid tree work. Ask for the registration before the quote, not after.
The line between pruning and removal is where a trimming job gets expensive. If the job turns into a removal, say a crown so cracked that the tree must come out, the permit path starts and replacement is required beyond the lot’s yearly allowance, which is 1 landmark or 2 significant trees on a lot up to 10,000 sq ft; keep pruning and removal as separate lines on the quote so the permit question stays clear.
Street trees are the other case. A tree entirely within the public right-of-way is regulated under BCC 14.06 rather than the clearing permit, so pruning a planting-strip tree is a question for the city before it is a question for your contractor; Land Use Review at 425-452-4188 can say which code applies to a tree on the property line.
Permit required for trees 6 in DBH and up
Threshold: Significant = 6"+ DBH at 4 ft; landmark = 24"+ DBH
Allowances and tiers: No-replacement allowance per yr by lot: up to 10,000 sf = 1 landmark or 2 significant; 10,001-20,000 = 1 or 3; 20,001-40,000 = 1 or 4; 40,001+ = 1 or 4
Fee: Not published (fee estimator only)

Power lines and utilities in Bellevue
Puget Sound Energy serves Bellevue. PSE trims near overhead primary lines in its right-of-way, but it does not publish a clearance distance for trimming; the only figure it gives is 10 ft, cited as the distance at which a line is an electrocution risk. For anything more specific about your line, call the number on your bill.
The service drop is the catch. PSE does not trim service lines, the wire from the pole to your house. Instead it performs a safety disconnection so you or a private arborist can trim. Work close to an energized line is for a qualified line-clearance crew only (see the note below), so a trimmer who offers to be careful near the drop is the wrong trimmer. Outage line: 1-888-225-5773; a downed line is 911.

What trimming costs in Bellevue
The modeled range below is crew-hours times the Washington crew cost in three size bands. In Bellevue the hours rise with the lot more than the tree: a mature Douglas fir on a 10,000-sq-ft lot with the house inside the drop zone is climbed and rigged because there is nowhere to drop limbs, which puts it at the top of its band, and a quote that hauls the brush off site is higher than one that chips it on the drive.
The Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue mean wage for tree trimmers and pruners is $33.85 an hour by BLS figures, a labor index and not a price. Trimming priced for a late-summer week is planned work; the same job in the November-to-February window, when 84% of King County’s storm reports fall, competes with emergency calls.
| Tree size | Crew-hours | Washington modeled range |
|---|---|---|
| Small ornamental | 1–3 | $200–$650 |
| Medium tree | 3–8 | $650–$1,700 |
| Large or mature tree | 8–16 | $1,700–$3,350 |
Modeled estimate, not quotes (method): crew-hours × $210 per crew-hour, rounded to $50.

When to trim in Bellevue
NOAA normals for the Seattle-Tacoma airport station make November Bellevue’s wettest month at 6.31 in, with 39.34 in of rain and 6.3 in of snow a year and July the driest month at 0.6 in. The county’s storm season is sharp, 84% of reports November through February with heavy snow the top type at 68 of 133, so structural pruning that lightens a heavy crown is done in late summer or early fall, before the load arrives.
Thinning a snow-loaded tree in February is emergency work at emergency prices. Zone 8b trees push growth early, so heavy cuts on deciduous trees are finished before bud break; conifers can be pruned in the dry window from July into September, when the brush is light and the lawn is firm.

What to do next
Walk the drop zone first: PSE does not trim the service line to your house, so book its safety disconnection before work there; anything on the primary line is the utility’s. Ask for the registered-provider proof and a quote that separates pruning from any removal, because removal is where the 6 in DBH permit starts. Check the company through the Washington license lookup, then call.
