Tree removal permits in Medford

Medford Municipal Code 6.700 through 6.750 regulates trees on public property and nothing else. A private tree comes under the code only as a nuisance that the city may order removed under MMC 6.735, so for an ordinary removal in your own yard there is no permit, no fee and no threshold to measure. The land development code was not verified for this page, and its riparian corridor rules in LDC 10.920 through 10.928 and hillside rules in 10.929 through 10.933 may restrict removals near creeks and on steep ground, so ask Planning if your lot touches either.

Public trees are the opposite case. Under MMC 6.725 you need a free permit from Parks and Recreation to treat, prune or remove any tree in the public right-of-way; it is valid for 90 days, and the Manager may require replacement. The City Arborist at 541-774-2652 is the person to call about a street tree. No heritage program or provider registration was found. For the statewide picture, including cities that do require permits, see the Oregon permit guide.

Storm records for Jackson County (covers Medford)

Jackson County is a county where fire, not snow or wind, tops the storm table. NOAA logged 202 reports since 2016, rank 7 of 36 Oregon counties, and 56 of them are Wildfire, ahead of Winter Storm at 46, High Wind at 44 and Heavy Snow at 30. FEMA’s National Risk Index rates the county’s wildfire risk Relatively High and winter weather Very High, with ice storm Very Low and strong wind Relatively Low.

That mix changes what tree work means in Medford. Removal and trimming here are often defensible-space work, cutting ladder fuels and opening crown spacing around a house before the fire season, and the defensible space guide covers how far to cut. The record is also growing rather than shrinking: 69 reports in 2023 through 2025 against 40 in 2020 through 2022, and only 49 percent fall from November through February, with January, February and March the peak months.

The largest episode in the county record is older and odder than the wildfire line suggests: on May 4, 2017, a cluster of afternoon and evening thunderstorms developed over the area, and several turned severe. NOAA tied nine reports to it for Jackson County, seven for Hail and two for Thunderstorm Wind, with no damage dollar figure attached. Hail strips leaves and bark but rarely drops a tree; the wind that comes with those storms is what brings limbs down.

Power lines and utilities in Medford

Pacific Power (PacifiCorp) is the electric utility for Medford. It does routine pruning near its distribution lines at no cost to you and keeps its transmission right-of-way clear, and it offers a free temporary disconnect of the service line so you or a licensed crew can work near the drop to the house. Its planting guide is a useful benchmark: a tree that matures under 20 feet belongs at least 20 feet from the pole, one of 20 to 40 feet at least 40 feet, and anything taller at least 60 feet, with an area 8 feet high cleared within a 10-foot radius of the pole.

Outages go to 1-877-508-5088, or text OUT to 722797; a downed line is a 911 call. The utilities index lists the other providers this site has mapped.

Rain, snow and the growing season in Medford

NOAA’s normals at the Medford Rogue Valley Airport station show 18.43 inches of precipitation a year and 3.4 inches of snow, with December the wettest month at 3.53 inches and July the driest at 0.24. The summer is long and nearly rainless, which is the climate behind the 56 wildfire reports and the reason a dead or dying tree near a house in Medford is a fire question before it is a storm question.

Medford is in USDA hardiness zone 8b. Replacement trees should be chosen for drought tolerance and fire resistance as much as for hardiness, planted in fall so winter rain establishes them, and kept clear of the house per the defensible-space spacing above.

Labor index for Medford

The metro wage estimate for Medford is suppressed in the BLS data, so the labor index here is Oregon statewide: a mean of $35.40 an hour for tree trimmers and pruners, a median of $36.27, and 1,610 people in the occupation across the state. A median above the mean points to a market where most workers earn near the middle rather than a few earning far above it. It is a wage, not a price; the modeled ranges on the service pages are built from crew-hours as the methodology describes.

Oregon statewide: $35.40 per hour mean wage for tree trimmers and pruners (BLS, May 2025); no metro estimate is published, so the statewide figure is shown. This is a labor index, not a price; the modeled crew-hour cost used on this site is $225 (method).

ZIP codes and nearby cities

Three ZIP codes carry most of Medford’s land: 97504, 97501 and 97502. The Census Bureau’s 2025 estimate puts the city at 86,494 people, up from 85,824 in 2020. Central Point is 4 miles away, Ashland 13 and Grants Pass 25, each with its own page, and because the Rogue Valley’s companies work the whole valley, a crew based in Central Point or Ashland is as local as one in Medford; the Grants Pass distance is the one that can add travel to a bid.

Tree services in Medford

Medford’s service pages cover removal, trimming, stump grinding and emergency work. Removal needs no city permit on private land but a free Parks permit for anything in the right-of-way, and the cost guide covers the modeled range; trimming here is largely defensible-space pruning; stump grinding is simple in a dry climate; and the emergency page covers winter storm damage, the second line in the county record. The arborist page is for a tree you want assessed rather than cut.

What to do next

Work out whether the tree is yours or the city’s. In your yard, Medford has nothing to issue, so start with a risk assessment if the tree is declining and with the defensible space guide if it is close to the house; in the right-of-way, get the free Parks permit from the City Arborist at 541-774-2652 first. On a creekside or hillside lot, ask Planning about the riparian and hillside rules before you cut.

Then check the company through the Oregon license lookup, ask how the crew will keep clear of any overhead line, and ask about debris, since burning rules fall to Oregon DEQ here. The Jackson County page has the full storm, wildfire and hazard record.
