Tree removal permits in Wenatchee

There is no tree chapter in Wenatchee’s zoning title. WCC 10.62.020 exempts single-family and duplex lots from the landscaping standards, so a homeowner can remove a yard tree without a city permit or fee. The one private-land rule that still applies is the critical areas ordinance, WCC 12.08, which covers trees on steep slopes, in stream buffers and in similar mapped areas.

Parking-strip trees fall under WCC 7.12, which limits which species may be planted and how far apart, bans hedges there and requires owners to abate vegetation that obstructs or is pest-infested. The chapter sets out no permit procedure for removal, but any work that occupies the street needs a right-of-way permit from Public Works. If your lot touches a slope or creek, ask the city about WCC 12.08 before cutting, and see the Washington permit guide for wider context.

Storm records for Chelan County (covers Wenatchee)

Few Washington counties log more severe weather than Chelan. NOAA’s record holds 440 reports, 3rd of the state’s 39 counties, and heavy snow accounts for 302 of them, more than two-thirds. Wildfire follows with 56, then high wind with 25 and winter storms with 20.

Snow arrives in a tight window: 76 percent of reports fall between November and February, peaking in January, December and February. Recent years have been calmer, 74 reports in the latest three against 149 in the prior three. FEMA’s National Risk Index (December 2025) rates wildfire Relatively High at 99.6 and wind Very Low at 10.8, so in Wenatchee the threats to trees are snow load in winter and fire in summer, not wind.

Largest recent episode: 2019-12-18: 15 reports (Heavy Snow 15).

The county’s largest episode ran from the evening of December 18 to the morning of December 20, 2019. A long stream of Pacific moisture rode a warm front into the region and dumped heavy snow on the eastern Washington mountains; farther east the warm air turned snow to rain quickly, but along the Cascades cold air stayed trapped near the ground, keeping the western Columbia Basin in snow far longer. NOAA logged 15 heavy-snow reports across the East Slopes Northern Cascades and the Wenatchee Area. Long-lasting wet snow is what bends and breaks evergreen limbs, so check for split leaders after any multi-day event like this one.

Power lines and utilities in Wenatchee

Chelan County PUD serves Wenatchee; report outages at (877) 783-8123, the PUD’s outage line. Customer service is (509) 663-8121 or (888) 663-8121, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. The PUD maintains its overhead transmission and distribution lines, but the secondary line from the pole to your meter is the customer’s responsibility. The PUD offers a free disconnect and reconnect so that line can be pruned safely, which is worth booking before a crew climbs near it.

For underground service, the PUD asks that trees be planted at least 6 feet to the side of buried lines and equipment. Its trim cycle, forestry contact at (509) 661-4251 and downed-line rules are on our Chelan PUD tree trimming page. See also tree removal near power lines and the utility directory.

Wenatchee is in USDA hardiness zone 7a, colder than the west-side cities, which narrows the list of replacement trees. Pick species that tolerate repeated heavy snow, since that is 302 of the county’s 440 reports. With FEMA’s wildfire rating at 99.6, keep new trees out of the zone immediately around the house and follow a defensible-space plan.

Local tree programs in Wenatchee

Wenatchee is a recognized Tree City USA: the Washington Department of Natural Resources’ list of communities that earned the Arbor Day Foundation award for 2022 includes Wenatchee.

Yard debris has a curbside route. WM’s Wenatchee service collects subscribed yard debris every other week, year round; besides the cart, it takes paper yard bags, 32-gallon cans with handles and lids up to 55 pounds, and bundles tied with sisal twine up to 4 feet by 2 feet. Plastic bags are refused because they are not compostable, and larger loads can go to transfer stations that accept clean green waste.

For tree pest and disease questions, WSU Extension’s Chelan County office is in Wenatchee at 412 Washington Street (509-667-6540) and runs the Chelan and Douglas County Master Gardener program.

Tree services in Wenatchee

The service pages below match Wenatchee’s light permit rules with its heavy snow record. Tree removal covers the critical areas exception and the Public Works right-of-way permit; tree trimming covers the PUD’s free disconnect for secondary lines; stump grinding covers 811 locates and Ecology burn rules; and emergency tree service covers snow-loaded failures.

What to do next

Confirm the tree is not in a critical area under WCC 12.08; if it is not, no city permit is needed. Book the PUD’s free disconnect if pruning near the secondary line. After a heavy snow, get a risk assessment on any split or leaning tree. Burning follows the Washington Department of Ecology’s rules. Look up any company in the Washington license lookup before work starts.
