Tree service in Walla Walla, Washington

Walla Walla’s tree code covers only street trees, heritage trees, nuisances and development landscaping, so a private yard tree needs no permit. Street trees are a different matter: planting, pruning and removal all need a free permit, and work on right-of-way trees 6 inches DBH or larger must be done by a Licensed Tree Care Specialist.

Tree removal permits in Walla Walla

WWMC 12.49.020 limits the city’s jurisdiction to street trees, heritage trees, nuisances and development landscaping. A private yard tree that is none of those can be removed without a permit. A designated heritage tree is the exception and needs a permit under 12.50.050.

Street trees are closely managed by the Municipal Arborist in Parks and Recreation (509-527-4527). Permits are needed to plant (12.49.050), to prune limbs above the size limits in 12.49.040, and to remove (12.49.055), with a 5-day posted notice before removal; permits are free and applications are processed monthly. Right-of-way trees 6 inches DBH or larger may only be worked on by a Licensed Tree Care Specialist, which requires a Washington contractor license, insurance and ISA or NAA certification, with a $50 initial and $25 renewal fee under 12.49.080. Fines run up to $500 a day. See the Washington permit guide.
