Stump grinding in Spokane, Washington

Grinding a stump on your own Spokane lot needs no city permit, but it is digging, so call 811 first to get buried lines marked. A stump in the planting strip is a public tree under SMC 12.02.960 and needs Urban Forestry’s permit.

Before the grinder arrives in Spokane

A grinder cuts below grade and wider than the stump, which puts it squarely in call-before-you-dig territory. Call 811 before the work date so gas, power, water and communication lines are marked, and confirm the crew will wait for the marks. Shallow service lines running to the house are the ones a grinder finds.

On private property there is no city permit for stump work in Spokane. A stump in the planting strip or right-of-way is different: that tree was public, and removal of a street tree, including what is left of it, falls under SMC 12.02.960 with Parks & Recreation – Urban Forestry (509-363-5495). Public-tree work requires an ISA Certified Arborist with a current Commercial Tree License.

What stump grinding costs in Spokane

The modeled range below is driven by stump diameter, root flare and access. Big ponderosa and fir stumps with wide flares sit in the upper rows; a narrow gate that keeps out a full-size grinder pushes the job to a smaller machine and more hours.

BLS puts the Spokane-Spokane Valley mean wage for tree trimmers and pruners at $25.94 an hour, an index of labor cost rather than a quote. Hauling the grindings away, instead of leaving them as mulch, is usually a separate line (method).

Grindings, wood and quarantines

Grindings are a mix of wood chips and soil. Left in place, they settle as they break down, so a hole filled with them will sink; rake most of them out and backfill with topsoil if you plan to sod or plant on the spot. The rest makes serviceable mulch for beds.

No pest quarantine is listed for the Spokane area, so moving chips or wood within the area is not restricted on that ground. Burning stumps or roots is governed by the Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency, not the city; check its current rules before lighting anything, and see Washington yard debris burning rules.

Burning the debris

Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency: Residential yard/garden debris burning prohibited for most residents (UGAs, smoke-sensitive areas); land-clearing fires prohibited except DNR silvicultural burns (SRCAA Regulation I, Art. VI) Official rules.

Replanting the spot

Grinding works in any season the ground is not frozen, which in a USDA zone 6b city with 45.4 inches of average snow rules out much of December through February. Late spring through fall is the practical window, and dry summer soil makes for cleaner cuts and less rutting from the machine.

If you are replanting, move the new tree a few feet off the old stump; decaying roots leave soft ground. Choose a cold-hardy species suited to 6b; see the tree guides.

What to do next

Call 811 first, confirm the stump is on your side of the property line, and decide whether you want the grindings left or hauled. If the stump is in the planting strip, contact Urban Forestry before anyone grinds.

Check the contractor through the Washington tree service license lookup. If the tree is still standing, start with tree removal in Spokane; county-wide data is on the Spokane County page.
