Tree removal permits in Klamath Falls
Private trees in Klamath Falls answer to maintenance rules rather than a removal permit. KFC 5.632 and 3.735 require 7 feet of clearance over sidewalks and 13 feet over the roadway, and a dead or hazardous tree is not allowed to stand, with the nuisance provisions in Chapter 5 behind that. Violations draw a fine of not less than $250 per offense under KFC 3.790. The city runs no heritage-tree program.
Street trees are the exception. Under KFC 3.730 you apply before you cut, prune or treat any street tree, and under 3.745 removal is allowed only for trees that are dangerous, dead or dying, diseased, damaging, or in power lines; a removed public tree is replaced from the city’s Tree Selection Guide. The Parks Department issues the Tree Permit form at 541-883-5391, and fees are set by the City Manager. Repeat violations can cost a business its license, so confirm who owns a curbside tree before work starts. The Oregon permit guide has the statewide picture.

Storm records for Klamath County (covers Klamath Falls)
Klamath County ranks 3rd of Oregon’s 36 counties for storm reports, with 232 in NOAA’s record, and the mix looks nothing like the west side. High wind and wildfire tie at 66 reports each, winter storm adds 61 and heavy snow 24. The count is climbing, too: 82 reports in the latest three years against 57 in the three before.
Only 51 percent of reports fall between November and February, and the peak runs January, February and March, later than the valley counties. FEMA’s National Risk Index (December 2025) rates winter weather Relatively High at 92.6 and gives wildfire a score of 94.4, while wind scores Very Low at 6.8; the index weighs exposure and losses, so it can rank wind low even where NOAA logs it often.

The top recent episode arrived on January 2, 2022, when an incoming front drove high wind, snow and blowing snow across the higher ground of southwest and south central Oregon. NOAA logged 4 winter storm reports spanning the Klamath Basin, northern and eastern Klamath County, and the southern and south central Oregon Cascades, with no damage dollars recorded. Wind on top of snow is the pairing that snaps loaded limbs, so pines and other conifers near the house are worth a look after any January front.

Power lines and utilities in Klamath Falls
Pacific Power serves Klamath Falls; check your bill to confirm and the utility directory for the provider’s trimming policy and outage number. The city code ties in here: a street tree in power lines is one of the five grounds for a removal permit under KFC 3.745. For a private tree near a line, the utility clears first and a crew follows, as tree removal near power lines explains.

Growing conditions in Klamath Falls
Klamath Falls is in USDA hardiness zone 7a, colder than the west-side valleys, so replacement trees need a 7a rating. With 66 wildfire reports in the county record and a wildfire score of 94.4, spacing matters as much as species: keep crowns off the roof and clear of the house, as laid out in defensible space. For a street tree, the city’s Tree Selection Guide sets the list.

Local tree programs in Klamath Falls
Klamath Falls is a recognized Tree City USA: the city announced in March 2025 that the Arbor Day Foundation had named it a 2024 Tree City USA. The city’s Tree Maintenance page puts upkeep of a street tree on the neighboring property, and the Parks Department published a Street Tree Plan in 2025 that sits alongside the Tree Selection Guide used for replacements.
Burning is seasonal here. Klamath County Fire District 1 set the 2026 spring open burn window for properties inside the Klamath County Air Quality Zone from 8 a.m. on March 28 to 5 p.m. on April 12, so brush from a spring removal either waits for a window or goes to disposal; ask the district (541-885-2056) whether an address is inside the zone. On the wildland side, the Oregon Department of Forestry’s Klamath-Lake District, based in Klamath Falls, handled 145 fires on 1,350.86 acres in 2025, including the 301-acre Township Fire in the Klamath Hills, the year’s largest human-caused fire in the district.
For a sick tree before a removal decision, OSU Extension’s Klamath County office on Washburn Way in Klamath Falls runs Master Gardener plant clinics in the growing season and answers questions at 541-883-7131 or through Ask Extension with photos of the affected tree.
Two pests show up in Klamath Falls yards. Bronze birch borer was first detected here in 2017, when six adult beetles were caught, with larvae present since at least 2015 (OSU Extension EM 9189); it kills European white and Jacquemontii birches from the top down. And because the code bars dead trees from standing, a ponderosa pine killed by pine bark beetles is a removal you will need to schedule.

What to do next
Find out who owns the tree first. A private tree can come down without a permit, a street tree needs an application through Parks at 541-883-5391, and a dead tree left standing can draw a fine of $250 or more. After a wind-and-snow front, a risk assessment separates trees that can stay from ones that cannot. Check any company in the Oregon license lookup before paying a deposit.
